What Makes This Awning Window Different
Frame Colours and Finishes for Awning Windows
Awning windows can be finished to suit your facade, interior palette, doors, roofing, and surrounding materials. Windows Tech offers classic colours, timber inspired finishes, and Aludec metallic tones for both traditional and contemporary properties.
Classic Colours
Tropical provides a crisp white finish similar to RAL 9016. Creme offers a softer neutral tone similar to RAL 9001 and works well with warmer interiors and lighter exterior finishes.
Timber Inspired Finishes
Sheffield Oak Concrete creates a cooler modern timber appearance. Turner Oak Malt, Turner Oak Toffee, and Turner Oak Walnut add warmer character without the repainting or maintenance associated with traditional timber frames.
Aludec Metallic Finishes
Jet Black and Anthracite Grey suit bold architectural designs. DB703, Basalt Grey, Umbra Grey, and Window Grey provide more understated metallic options, while Traffic White and Surfmist complement lighter facades.
How Awning Windows Work

Awning windows use a top hinged sash that opens outward from the bottom. This creates ventilation through the lower part of the window while keeping the opening clear inside the room.
Closed Position
When closed, the sash presses against the frame seals and locking points. This helps limit draughts, air leakage, outside noise, and unwanted movement.
Partially Open Position
The sash can be opened to provide controlled airflow without creating a wide opening. This suits bedrooms, bathrooms, laundries, kitchens, and rooms where steady ventilation is more useful than maximum airflow.
Wider Open Position
Opening the sash further increases ventilation while the top hinge keeps it angled outward. The available opening depends on the window dimensions, hardware, and selected configuration.
Built for Ventilation, Comfort, and Everyday Use
Ventilation Without Using Interior Space
The sash opens outward, leaving blinds, curtains, benches, and furniture inside the room clear.
Useful During Light Rain
The outward angled sash provides some cover over the opening, allowing ventilation during light rain when wind direction and conditions are suitable.
Stronger Weather Sealing
Awning windows close firmly against the frame seals. This can help reduce draughts, dust intrusion, air leakage, and moisture entry compared with worn older windows.
Better Thermal Comfort
uPVC frames, double glazing, triple glazing, and Low E glass options can help reduce summer heat gain and winter heat loss through the window.
Reduced Outside Noise
Acoustic laminate and suitable insulated glazing can help reduce traffic, aircraft, school, and neighbourhood noise. A tested configuration using specified laminated double glazing has an estimated total awning window rating of Rw 34, although actual results depend on the complete window and installation.
Secure Everyday Closing
Suitable locks and European hardware help the sash close firmly and remain stable during normal use. The hardware configuration is selected according to the sash size and glass weight.

FAQs

Are awning windows suitable for Melbourne homes?
Yes. Awning windows suit Melbourne homes because they provide controlled ventilation, strong sealing, and an outward opening design that keeps interior space clear. They work well in bedrooms, kitchens, bathrooms, laundries, apartments, and home renovations.
Can awning windows stay open during rain?
They can provide ventilation during light rain because the outward angled sash offers some cover over the opening. The window should still be closed during heavy rainfall, strong winds, or wind driven rain.
Can awning windows be double glazed or triple glazed?
Yes. Windows Tech manufactures double glazed awning windows and compatible triple glazed configurations. The final glass unit depends on the window dimensions, thermal requirements, acoustic goals, and glazing thickness.
Are uPVC awning windows energy efficient?
They can provide strong energy efficiency when paired with suitable insulated glazing and correct installation. uPVC frames reduce thermal bridging, while double glazing, triple glazing, and Low E glass can help manage heat gain and heat loss.
Can awning windows reduce outside noise?
Yes. Double glazing and acoustic laminate can improve noise reduction when combined with suitable frame seals and professional installation. One tested laminated double glazed configuration has an estimated total awning window rating of Rw 34, but results vary by glass makeup, window size, installation, and surrounding construction.
Are awning windows suitable for bathrooms?
Yes. Awning bathroom windows provide ventilation without opening into the room. They can also be made with obscure glass, acid etched glass, tinted glass, or white translucent laminate for privacy.
Do awning windows open inward or outward?
Awning windows open outward from the bottom and remain hinged along the top. This keeps the interior area clear and directs ventilation through the lower opening.
Can old aluminium awning windows be replaced with uPVC windows?
Yes, in many cases. Windows Tech measures the opening, checks the existing frame and surrounding structure, and confirms the removal and installation requirements before manufacturing the replacement uPVC awning window.
What glass options are available for awning windows?
Available choices may include clear glass, Low E glass, acoustic laminate, tinted glass, obscure glass, acid etched glass, laminated glass, toughened glass, and white translucent privacy laminate.
How much do awning windows cost in Melbourne?
Awning window cost depends on the dimensions, glazing, glass type, frame finish, hardware, access, removal work, and installation requirements. Custom made windows require confirmed measurements and specifications before an accurate quotation can be prepared.
How do I request a quote for awning windows in Melbourne?
Send photos of your existing windows to us on our contact page, approximate measurements, your suburb, and what you want to improve. Windows Tech can review the opening and advise whether a site measure is required.
